When
it comes to Bloodhounds, the most important thing in the
beginning is to teach the dog to contact the trainer and
also maintain the contact (at least for me it was). When
the dog is independently sniffing around and ignoring you,
you cannot even dream of being able to teach him anything.
In practice it works like this: every
time the dog comes to you or even looks at you, click and
treat and praise him. When the dog has come to you, you
can also do something nice with him, e.g. throw a ball for
him. If the dog does not independently start offering the
behavior you want (i.e. come to you on his own) you can
lure him to do this by e.g. hiding from him (if the dog
roams free ahead of you) or just by stopping, usually the
dog will eventually become curious to see why his human
is not coming along. I attached the "come" cue
to the behavior when the dog was already running towards
me, this way the dog learns quickly what "come"
means and that making contact is always a smart thing to
do, you never know what nice things you get for doing it.
